Laboratory-acquired infections.
Although numerous individual case reports and a few instances of institutional outbreaks of laboratory-acquired infections had appeared in the literature, the magnitude of this problem as it relates to the occupational health of laboratory workers did not become evident until the results of an extensive survey conducted in 1950 became available. Prior to that time only an occasional report conc...
متن کاملLaboratory-acquired infections.
Laboratory-acquired infections due to a wide variety of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites have been described. Although the precise risk of infection after an exposure remains poorly defined, surveys of laboratory-acquired infections suggest that Brucella species, Shigella species, Salmonella species, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and Neisseria meningitidis are the most common causes. Infec...
متن کاملLaboratory diagnosis of fungal infections
Selection of appropriate specimens for culture and microscopic examination is based on the results of clinical and radiographic examination and consideration of the most likely fungal pathogen that may cause such an infection. Specimens should be collected under aseptic conditions or after appropriate cleaning and decontamination of the collection site and rapidly transported to the clinical my...
متن کاملLaboratory-acquired vaccinia infection.
BACKGROUND Complications following vaccination with vaccinia virus have been well described but are not commonly observed. The use of vaccinia as a tool in molecular biology, in the development of therapeutics, and the anticipated increase of vaccinations in the general population due to the threat of bioterrorism have created a renewed awareness of the post-vaccination complications and the co...
متن کاملLaboratory-acquired Brucellosis
We report two laboratory-acquired Brucella melitensis infections that were shown to be epidemiologically related. Blood culture isolates were initially misidentified because of variable Gram stain results, which led to misdiagnoses and subsequent laboratory exposures. Notifying laboratory personnel who unknowingly processed cultures from brucellosis patients is an important preventive measure.
